Assemblyman David DiPietro (R,C-East Aurora), the ranking member of the Assembly Corrections Committee, issued the following statement in the wake of the Collins Correctional Facility being placed on lockdown. This is not a surprise. This is a direct result of the radical left’s reckless, pro-criminal policies that have turned our prisons into war zones.

“This is exactly what we said was going to happen. For years, my colleagues and I have warned that policies like the HALT Act would enable violent inmates, weaken disciplinary measures and put the lives of our brave correction officers at risk. This is a direct result of liberal policies that prioritize criminals over the men and women who work to maintain order behind bars,” said DiPietro.

“The reality is that Albany’s progressive elites have no idea what they are talking about. Their detached, idealist, culture-war nonsense jeopardizes the lives of both inmates and staff. They are going to get someone killed. The HALT Act has turned our correctional facilities into battlegrounds. It has stripped officers of the tools they need to maintain safety while giving violent offenders free reign.

“Enough is enough. The radical left has been wrong on crime at every turn, and their failures are measured in incidents like today’s. Our correction officers deserve leaders who have their backs, not weak, pandering politicians bowing to the woke mob. I am calling for the immediate repeal of HALT and every other pro-criminal policy Albany’s progressive machine has rammed through.

“I extend my prayers to our correction officers, and I will continue to fight against these reckless policies,” DiPietro concluded.

Assemblyman David DiPietro represents the 147th Assembly District, which includes parts of Erie and Wyoming counties.
