POPULATION CHANGE BY COUNTY

Overview
• Each year, the Census Bureau releases population estimates for all states,
counties, cities, and towns in the United States. The most recent data
shows population estimates for counties as of July 1, 2022. Population
estimates for cities and towns will arrive in May.
• The Census Bureau also releases data by state detailing the components of
each state’s population change. Included in this is a Net Domestic
Migration number which shows how much population each state has
gained or lost from other states.
Net Domestic Migration Figures
• Between April 1, 2020 and July 1, 2022, New York’s Net Domestic
Migration Loss was 664,921, second only to California (871,127).
• As a percentage of population, New York’s Net Domestic Migration Loss
since 2020 was -3.29%, higher than any other state. California was second
at -2.20%
Population Change Figures
• The July 1, 2022 population estimate for the United States was
333,287,557. That is an increase of 1,838,037 (0.55%) since April 1, 2020.
• The July 1, 2022 population estimate for New York State was 19,677,151.
That is a decrease of 524,079 (-2.6%) since April 1, 2020.
• Between 2021 and 2022, New York State’s population fell by 180,341, a
decrease of 0.91%. This is equivalent to losing one and one-third of an
Assembly District
• Orange County had the largest population growth since 2020 at 4,617.
Otsego County had the largest rate of increase at 3.60%.
• Kings County lost the most population since 2020 with -145,559. Bronx
County had the largest rate of decrease at -6.30%.
