Assemblyman David DiPietro (R,C-East Aura) today slammed Gov. Kathy Hochul and Albany Democrats for their attempts to delay the NY-21 special election, calling it a brazen political stunt designed to weaken Republican control in the House at the expense of New Yorkers.
“If this isn’t political, then why are Democrats in the majority allegedly taking orders from Hakeem Jeffries and the national party?” said DiPietro. “This is a deliberate ploy to silence the voices of 750,000 New Yorkers in Washington just so they can rig the system in their favor. There is nothing democratic about this—quite the opposite. It’s an outright attack on democracy itself.”
DiPietro called out Hochul’s hypocrisy in claiming ‘fiscal responsibility’ as the excuse for denying New Yorkers a timely election.
“Kathy Hochul will shovel out millions to Broadway and Hollywood tax credits without a second thought, but when it comes to ensuring New Yorkers have representation in Congress, suddenly she’s a budget hawk?” DiPietro continued. “This has nothing to do with fiscal responsibility and everything to do with partisan electioneering.”
The current law mandates that a special election be held within 80 days of a congressional vacancy to ensure constituents are not left without a voice. Delaying the NY-21 election would break precedent, defy the intent of the state constitution and strip North Country residents of the representation they rightfully deserve.
“I will fight against this corrupt Albany power grab. New Yorkers deserve better than backroom deals dictated by Washington Democrats, The people—not politicians—should decide who represents them.”
